RR Donnelley’s all-digital workflow offers many opportunities for quality enhancement through analysis and optimization of system metrics. One means of delivering process and product improvements is through a Closed Loop computer link between a color measurement device, a press’s remote ink control console, and the press’s ink keys. This system utilizes a video camera to locate the color bar on a press sheet, and a spectrophotometer to measure the density and other aspects of color bar patches. During the startup of a new job, ink density targets are entered into the system based on the type of paper being used. The patches are then read and ink key adjustments are automatically made to meet these targets. After color OKs have been achieved, the system continuously reads the sheets and corrects the press to maintain the approved color.
Achieving and maintaining color targets is critical. With the Closed Loop System, press crews are able to quickly and automatically balance color on a job: across the sheet and on both sides of the form. The integration of this system into the RR Donnelley workflow has shortened makereadies, reduced run waste, and allowed press operators to maximize their skills without losing time to manual adjustment of ink fountains.
